2/13 Poopa in Kuta (Lombok/Indonesia)

First things first: Watching the 49ers in THE SUPERBOWL!!!

We did not win this game but I was so proud that our team made it to the big one... Can't wait until next season!!!

The fishing villages and surrounding beaches of Kuta Lombok are surf havens where you WILL come across local kids selling bracelets, moms selling sarungs, and dads selling DVDs. It drove Clement to extend various invitations...

"If you ask me one more time I will put the bracelets in your ass, and your head in the sea!" (imagine it with a French accent!)

But in the ocean...there is none of that. Instead, you will only find brown or red surfers, boats, and perhaps some poop.

Surfing in Gerupuk Bay - Home to 5 different spots which work on various tide/wind/swell combinations. All are accessible by boat only.

  • Inside Gerupuk/Bumbang Bay: a right-hander over a flat reef, suitable for all levels, with a long wall and a forgiving lip. Surfable at any seasons and can handle any wind, even the tradewind, as it is protected by the surrounding hills. Best on an incoming tide and can hold 10ft solid.
  • Outside Gerupuk/ Gili Golong: A right-hander that good at mid to high tide, take your booties at low. Multiple peaks outside offer big drops on takeoff bending into a hollow and fast inside section. Can hold 8-10ft but is best at 4-6ft, from October to April.
  • Don-Don: The furthest break inside the bay and as a result needs a bigger swell to break. A perfect A-frame peak walling and bending both left and right. For all level of surfers. Can be good in any season as long as the winds are light. Works on any tide, with out going tide the best time.
  • Kid's Point/Pelawangan: Another right-hander that only breaks on the biggest days, but when it works, its barrel city. Best on an incoming tide.

What we paid:
  • Motorbike rental: 40,000-60,000 rupiah ($4-$6)
  • Surfboard rental: 35,000-50,000 rupiah ($3-$5)
  • Boat Ride: 25,000-80,000 rupiah ($5-$8)
  • Smiling even when a barb has been injected into your big toe, foot has been scraped up by coral reef, surfboard has repeatedly bounced off your face and head, leash breaks and surfboard swims away, and salt water drips from your nose the rest of the day: PRICELESS!!
  • New-found love for pooping underwater: FREE - in every sense.

Goatee's!

Oh dear - Indonesian cigarettes have a sweet filter paper and are "laced" with cloves... all too appealing for kids, I think.

Lunch at one of our favorite local warungs (restaurants) - WARUNG JAWA II - how can you beat FRESH juice for 6,000 rupiah ($.60)??

Drinks and dinner at Novotel's, where a friend of mine got married years ago :)

Petanque (vierd French game)

Mon God, what's worse than 2 dogs getting stuck post-love-making session? With another dog watching, and a human taking photos?

Oh.

Fishermen on foot in low-tide. So enchanting...

Kuta felt like the climax of our trip, as by the time we left, we had less time to spend than time already spent. Unfortunately, during this time I realized that I had lost my ATM card AND overstayed my visa by 1 day (TIP: a 30-day visa expires after 30 days, not necessarily 1 month). So I had to leave Kuta and Clement behind for the Immigration Office in Mataram....

Sorry for the early goodbye, Kuta Lombok. Terima Kasih for the peace and sanctuary, and all the memories (and scars) that I will keep for all time!

Don't miss me too much, Clement ;)
